I have a passion for singing and performing a range of different styles, with a background in Contemporary, Gospel, Jazz & Musical Theatre.
I'm originally from Christchurch and started singing when I was 8 years old at Church. That led to having weekly one-on-one singing lessons with a tutor and after-school group singing lessons. I had opportunities to sing on the local TV station (CTV), perform in kids choirs at the Christchurch Cathedral, and with NZ singer, Suzanne Prentice, at the World Vision Kids for Kids Concert - definitely a highlight of my childhood!
After high school and a year at music school, I was invited to spend 18 months touring Australia with a Contemporary Gospel Band, performing for crowds from 20 - 5000 people. I then enjoyed a year in North America where I experienced teaching music in Primary Schools before I moved back to NZ and to Hamilton to pursue my Bachelor of Music (BMus) at the University Of Waikato, Bachelor of Media Arts (Honours) (BMA Honours) at Wintec.
While studying, I had the opportunity to co-produce and direct the University's Musical Theatre Showcases two years in a row and write, produce, and star in an autobiographical one-woman show.
As much as I LOVE performing, I realised really early on in my studies how much I also loved to work 'behind the scenes', so I became an usher, which paved the way for me to become a stage manager, front of house manager and, now, I work full time as administrator and junior event manager at a Performing Arts Centre.
At the end of 2021, I officially launched Sofia's Voice Studio to encourage and teach young and not so young in using their voices.
My latest role was “Miss Lynch” (pictured) in Clarence St Theatre’s 2022 production of ‘Grease’ in Hamilton. Before that, I was “Gymnasia” in Hamilton Musical Theatre’s 2021 production of ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’, at Riverlea Theatre.
Performing takes a lot of effort, but it's so rewarding. Having worked both on and off the stage, the transition from performer to teacher has been so much fun! I have a big heart for bringing music into the community and offer support for beginner singers (at all ages), whether it is after-school lessons or just a hobby.
I am a strong believer that everyone should be able to have a life of music. That's why I became a teacher. Whether you're just a beginner or an advanced student needing guidance, let's explore music together!
I look forward to working with you.
